My Mole Removal Surgery Story!
How did I come about to get my mole removal surgery? I had always had a mole on my back which never really bothered me too much. Not until the point where I had to start wearing a bra anyway! I eventually decided to get it removed when it started REALLY bothering me. It started feeling like it would be pinched more and more by my bra strap. Finally, one time it pulled it enough that it bleed a little and I decided it was time to get it removed. I didn't know there was anything out there other than surgical removal. I honestly didn't even think to research an ulterior way because I had never heard of anything being mentioned. I actually didn't even know of laser surgery as an option back then. Not that I would have been able to afford that anyway! So, off to the doctor I went for mole removal surgery... The doctor decided that he wanted to cut out the entire mole, not just "shave" the top of it off. (Gosh that sounds gross) Anyway, I got an injection near the mole to numb the skin around it. The doctor cut out the mole and some surrounding skin, gave me 4 stitches and tells me to come back in a week. A week later I come back and head to his office. He says to me, "So, you're here to get a mole removed?" to which I said " Ummm no. You removed one last week. I'm here to get the stitches out." He looks at my chart and says, "oh ok, lets take a look at it." I show him my back and he says to me..." Wow. I did 4 stitches? That seems like a bit much. I must have been tired that day"....He then continues to tell me how he keeps jelly beans in his office because he doesn't have time to eat lunch sometimes and gets low blood sugar. All I could think of was..." YOU WHAT??? MUST HAVE BEEN TIRED? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? " but...being nice....I politely smiled and kept it all inside. Fast-forward several weeks to when redness has disappeared only slightly from the incision area. My mole was NOT that big...I sort of even thought it was cute. Well, the scar that I realized was going to remain after a few weeks....now THAT was huge! (compared to the mole anyway). It is oval shaped compared to my pencil eraser sized mole I had. Being a ballerina, my back is constantly showing. It's beautiful to see the muscular back of a dancer. (in my opinion anyway) Well...now when I see my back, there is a big scar there! Sort of takes away from the graceful dancer thing if you know what I mean. I am definitely glad that the mole is gone and I don't catch it on my bra strap anymore BUT I sure wish I had known about DermaTend and how much smaller of a chance of scarring there is with it many years ago. It would not have been a question on how I would have removed it! Here is a photo of my scar about 6 months after the surgery and a photo of it as of today. (5 years later!)((THIS IS COMING SOON!) I do wish I had a better photo of it back then but this was the only one I could find. It is an old dance photo.
